Former West Ham defender Lionel Scaloni has included current Hammers star Manuel Lanzini in his Argentina squad. He has also selected Santiago Ascacibar – a reported West Ham target who would have been an ideal capture.
Ascacibar was linked with a move to West Ham towards the end of the summer transfer window. But Manuel Pellegrini decided against signing another holding midfield player.
This has quickly been identified as a problem position after two games of the 2019/20 season. The Irons have conceded six goals in two games and a defensive midfielder like Ascacibar would improve the squad. Perhaps Lanzini can have a word with his international team-mate in early September.
Santiago Ascacibar: Just what West Ham need
According to MDZ, West Ham considered Ascacibar before the end of the English transfer window. The 22-year-old plays for Stuttgart and the Argentina national side. Given that Stuttgart were relegated, he might have been available for a cut-price fee.
Ascacibar is a young and exciting player who has already proven his worth in the Bundesliga. Moreover, he is exactly what West Ham need. The failure to sign a defensive midfielder could prove costly for the Hammers.
If West Ham land Ascacibar in January, he could compete with Declan Rice and provide cover for the England star. It would also allow West Ham to shore up the midfield against stronger teams like Manchester City.
