Pundit Jermaine Jenas seems to have got West Ham United fans all wrong with a misguided rant.
The Hammers have made a disastrous start to the season under new boss Manuel Pellegrini.
Four defeats from their opening four Premier League games has seen serious doubts raised over the Chilean’s ability to push West Ham forward.
Pundits, many of whom were backing West Ham to do well under Pellegrini this season, have been quick to write the East Londoners off suggesting relegation beckons.
Supporters are naturally concerned too.
Fans are the only ones to step up to next level at West Ham
West Ham fans have showed their unwavering loyalty over the years, filling Upton Park and away ends even in the Championship.
After the London Stadium move Hammers fans were the only ones to move up to the fabled ‘next level’.
They sold out over 52,000 season tickets for three consecutive seasons, second only to Manchester United.
There were some boos after the lacklustre performance in the home defeat to Wolves last time out.
But in the main West Ham fans are a knowledgeable bunch who will turn up every week home and away to back their team.
So former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jermaine Jenas got it all wrong when he took aim at those very fans with a misguided rant on BT Sport following that defeat to Wolves.
‘Moaned all last season, what you going to moan all this season too?’
“I look at West Ham fans and Arsenal fans now and I almost want to go ‘I don’t want to hear no moaning from any of you this year, you need to just back your team and understand that you’re going through a process’,” Jenas told BT Sport.
“Yea it’s a lot of players (Pellegrini has signed) but to integrate them into a style of play also takes time.
“Both sets of fans, and Arsenal fans to be fair to them I think are doing it, but West Ham fans need to just jump on board and say ‘listen we’re going to stick by a manager now’.
“Moaned all last year, what they going to moan again all this year? Just stick with it.”
First up the comparison between West Ham and Arsenal fans is laughable.
Get over lasagne-gate and do your homework Jermaine
Hammers fans are loyal to a fault.
Meanwhile Arsenal fans started abandoning their club and turned on their best ever manager after one season without a trophy and Champions League football.
West Ham have been packing out their stadiums and allocations week in, week out despite not winning a major trophy for nearly 40 years.
Yes the Hammers faithful can be demanding.
But all they ask for is maximum effort.
They have every right to moan if they are not seeing that from their teams.
And in the main the fans are the only ones who are not knee-jerking after just four games of a 38 game season.
Perhaps Jenas is still upset about Lasagne-gate, after all he hasn’t brought it up for a couple of months.
Do your homework next time Jermaine, don’t join the lazy pundit brigade.
