Tottenham beat West Ham comfortably on Saturday, and Jamie Redknapp suggested that Jose Mourinho would have seen the trip to east London as the ideal way to kick off his Spurs tenure.
The north London club parted ways with Mauricio Pochettino on Tuesday night, before appointing Mourinho as his replacement 12 hours later.
And Tottenham looked like a completely different team against West Ham on Saturday.
The Hammers, meanwhile, were incredibly poor once again. And they are now winless in seven Premier League games.
West Ham are in a relegation battle. It’s as simple as that. And these are dire, dire times for the east Londoners.
Redknapp wrote his regular column for the Daily Mail, and suggested that Mourinho would have viewed the trip to the London Stadium as the ideal way to kick-start his reign as Tottenham boss:
“Timing is important and Tottenham’s trip to West Ham came at a good time. When my dad took over at Spurs in October 2008, his first game was at home to Bolton, who were struggling, too. It was an inviting fixture and Tottenham won 2-0, securing their first victory of the season. I bet Mourinho saw going to West Ham in the same way. This is a club treading water under Manuel Pellegrini and, despite the scoreline, Tottenham’s win never looked in doubt.”
And in truth, Redknapp is probably spot on. West Ham have been shambolic over the past couple of months. And they need to sort themselves out quickly if they are to still enjoy a successful campaign.
Next up for the Hammers is back-to-back away games against Chelsea and Wolves respectively.
And a couple of defeats there could spell the end of Manuel Pellegrini’s reign at West Ham.
