Jamaal Lascelles is completely the wrong target for West Ham – here’s why

The idea of West Ham United signing Jamaal Lascelles is a big concern.

Expected to leave Newcastle United imminently, Lascelles has been linked with a move to West Ham United.

While there’s little doubt that West Ham need defensive reinforcements during the January transfer window, it’s difficult to argue a case for Lascelles being the man.

How many more signings do we need to make for you to feel confident about staying up?! 🤔

Still an awful lot of work to do…

That is not a reflection on the player himself. Lascelles was a fine captain for Newcastle, handed the armband at a relatively young age due to his impressive leadership skills.

On the pitch, he played a key role in the Magpies winning the Championship and then staying in the Premier League.

The fact he hasn’t completed 90 senior minutes in almost two years, however, should worry West Ham.

Jamaal Lascelles suffered a serious knee injury against West Ham

After Newcastle’s transformation following their takeover, Lascelles eventually dropped out of the team.

He did, however, reclaim his place following an injury to Sven Botman and would later play an impressive role in Newcastle’s famous Champions League win over Paris Saint-Germain.

There would be a major blow on the horizon, however. Lascelles suffered an ACL injury during Newcastle’s dramatic win over West Ham at St James’ Park in March 2024.

Lascelles’ signing would be a waste of money and guarantee relegation for West Ham…

Almost two years on from that, the defender hasn’t completed 90 minutes at senior level since.

It would therefore make relying on him during a relegation battle a risk.

West Ham have been interested in Jamaal Lascelles for years

Interestingly, West Ham were first linked with a move for Lascelles way back in 2017.

He certainly appears to have been on the radar for many years now, although that was before such a big injury.

Despite that long-term interest, it is still difficult to make a case for the 32-year-old being anything like a good signing in West Ham’s current predicament.

Again, that is not a reflection on what he can actually offer on the pitch. It’s about getting him on there consistently in the midst of a relegation battle.
