Michail Antonio has said he is feeling back to his best this season after a plague of injury issues. Speaking to West Ham’s official website, the former Forest man was full of confidence in his body and ability once again.
The winger, who has played in almost every position possible for West Ham, has had a torrid time with injuries over the past few seasons. A number of hamstring injuries, along with calf and rib issues meant he struggled to find consistency.
His first two seasons in east London were excellent and culminated in winning Hammer of the Year in the 2016/17 season. However, after the highs have come the lows and a loss of form and injury issues have prevented him from reaching his once giddy heights.
This season he has started to get back on and track and is now feeling happy once again. Antonio said: “I kept stopping myself when I was taking people on and it changed my whole game and I lost my form.”
The mental impact as well as the physical impact of his injuries had taken a toll on Antonio and had left him second guessing his actions. His strengths rely on his physical capabilities so to lose confidence in them is a major blow.
Antonio continued by saying that: “Now, I’ve got my mind right, I’ve had a good run of games and I’m starting to feel the benefits of it.”
This is positive news from the 28 year-old, who is now looking more and more like the player of two seasons ago. Injuries to Andriy Yarmolenko and Chicharito have allowed Antonio to play as both a winger and striker this season.
Now, Antonio is focused on scoring more goals and adding the cutting edge to his game.
“I need to start scoring and creating more goals as they are the parts of my game I’ve not got back properly yet.”
