West Ham legend John Moncur suggested that West Ham’s lack of pace in the final third worries him, when speaking exclusively to Love Sport Radio yesterday.
The Hammers are currently sitting in 16th spot in the Premier League table. And they are level on points with 18th placed Bournemouth and 17th placed Watford.
David Moyes’s side have shown in recent weeks that they have the quality needed to avoid the drop.
This is a results business, however. West Ham need to forget about playing good football at the moment, and just find a way to grind out results.
With some really difficult games on the horizon though, that will be a lot easier said than done.
West Ham starting to look dangerous in attack
The Hammers do have plenty of threats of their own. But one concern for Moyes will be that his only pacy attacking threat is Michail Antonio. Jarrod Bowen is no slouch, but he is far from rapid.
And Moncur alluded to that, when speaking to Love Sport Radio yesterday:
“What worries me, particularly before you know, Antonio wasn’t playing- he was injured- and before Bowen came, I didn’t feel we had any players at all to stretch the defence. So I think it’s more optimistic in that respect and looking at the teams around us, I do think we’re better.”
With Antonio and Bowen playing alongside Sebastien Haller in attack, West Ham certainly seem to have more of a cutting edge about their play.
But the trio need to be more clinical in front of goal during the remaining nine games, that’s for sure.
With Wolves, Tottenham and Chelsea all to come in their next three matches, all of the Hammers players will have to be on their very best form.
It will be a case of whether they have the guts for the fight as well as the quality, however.
