Jack Wilshere may well have his eye on playing in a more advanced midfield role this season, after talking about his desire to get amongst the goals more in 2018/19.
The 26-year-old, who signed for the Hammers on a free after running down his contract with Arsenal, is ready for a fresh start at the London Stadium.
Wilshere’s Gunners career was turbulent; many feel that he showed glimpses of being the top talent he can be, whilst others are of the opinion that he never really kicked on after his sensational performance against Barcelona as a teenager. All those injuries undoubtedly hindered his progress.
One thing he certainly never did during his time at the Emirates was score goals consistently from midfeld, and that’s something he’s hoping to do in West Ham colours.
Speaking to Gary Neville on Sky Sports’ Premier League launch, as quoted by football.london: “I am disappointed with the [number of] appearances. I have said many times I have missed too much football. The goals of course, I need to be scoring more and now to show it, stop saying it and put myself in the opportunity to score more.
“If I am waiting for one, I want to be a player getting in there.”
It will be interesting to see if Wilshere, off the back of these comments, plays more of an advanced role this season for the Irons.
The Englishman definitely has the attributes to excel further forward, such as dribbling in tight pockets, and could work well with Mark Noble and/or Declan Rice in behind him snuffing out opposition fires.
