Gary Neville was very impressed with West Ham’s performance against Liverpool

Gary Neville praised West Ham’s performance against Liverpool, when speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football last night (February 24th, 9:53 pm).

The Hammers were given absolutely no hope by anyone before the game at Anfield last night.

But David Moyes’s men surprised everyone by coming from behind to lead 2-1 early on in the second-half.

West Ham showed real character, and it would be hard to argue that they didn’t deserve a point against the champions elect.

The Hammers have a massive game next at home to Southampton on Saturday, and if they replicate their performance against Liverpool, they will have no problem beating the Saints.

Neville spoke on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football programme after last night’s game, and highlighted a huge improvement in the West Ham’s performance levels and the mentality of the players:

“I never held any hope for West Ham, I didn’t think we’d have a game going into the last half an hour. I though it would just be a procession. My feeling in the tunnel before the game was just give us a match. Give us something that you can take away from it. And West Ham have done that.”

Neville went on to praise West Ham players’ attitude:

“There have been times when I have watched West Ham this season. There was a Friday Night Football at Sheffield United where I was embarrassed with the mentality of the players at the end of the game when they were doing their interviews, talking about how tough it is to go to Bramall Lane and talking about how unfortunate they were not to get a point. Tonight they were unfortunate not to get a point. That’s more like it from West Ham. We saw some damning statistics before the game. That’s a template for them. they can take something from that.”

West Ham now have a benchmark that they must reach in every game between now and the end of the season.

Out of the Hammers’ remaining 11 games this term, they face home matches against Southampton, Wolves, Chelsea, Burnley, Watford and Aston Villa.

They must be targeting four wins at the very least from those outings. And if they manage to do that, they should be able to pick up enough points in their away games to avoid relegation down to the Championship.
