West Ham have made some truly shocking signings over the past few years.
Simone Zaza, Carlos Sanchez and Alvaro Arbeloa are just some of the names who graced the London Stadium, and failed to impress.
But perhaps the worst one of the lot was Jonathan Calleri.
The Argentine joined the Hammers on a season long loan from Uruguayan outfit Deportivo Maldonado in the summer of 2016.
Calleri struggled badly in east London, however, scoring just one goal in 19 appearances for West Ham (Transfermarkt).
He was sent back to his parent club in the summer of 2017. And Hammers fans quickly forgot about the 26-year-old.
Calleri was sent out on loan to two more clubs before the start of this season. And then he was loaned to La Liga side Espanyol in the summer of 2019.
Now, he hasn’t really done much for them this season. The South American has scored just one goal in 17 league outings (Transfermarkt).
That all changed last night, however. Calleri scored a sensational hat-trick for Espanyol in their Europa League tie against Premier League side Wolves.
Perhaps that will give him the kind of confidence boost to really kick-start his career.
The 26-year-old never proved what he was capable of at West Ham. In fact. he has been fairly underwhelming anywhere he has played.
But last night changed all that. Scoring a hat-trick against a team with Wolves’ calibre proves that he has what it takes to make it at the highest level.
Perhaps we will now see the real Jonathan Calleri.
