Felipe Anderson transfer links bring back memories of Julien Faubert’s comical move to Real Madrid

West Ham winger Felipe Anderson is being linked with a £65m switch to Real Madrid, according to Sky Sports News.

Real Madrid will swoop for the 25-year-old Brazilian, who has scored nine times this season, if their move for Chelsea’s Eden Hazard falls through.

This would be a rare example of Real Madrid signing a West Ham player. But it is not unprecedented.

West Ham and Real Madrid links

If Anderson completes his switch from West Ham to Real Madrid, he will join an exclusive club of players to have represented both sides.

Current West Ham striker Javier Hernandez was at Real Madrid. Alvaro Arbeloa enjoyed much more success with the Spanish giants than he did in East London.

And going back a few years, West Ham signed ex-Real Madrid and Arsenal striker Davor Suker in the early 2000s.

But one player to have played for West Ham and Real Madrid always sticks in the memory: Julien Faubert.

In one of the most bizarre transfer deals in West Ham’s recent history, Faubert moved from East London to Real Madrid on loan.

After one and a half seasons at West Ham, the Frenchman decided he wanted to move to Real Madrid. In late January 2009, he was sent on loan to the Spanish heavyweights on a half-season deal.

Faubert had hardly set the world alight while at West Ham and many Hammers and neutral fans thought this deal was very comical.

Real Madrid had an option to sign the speedy Martinique international on a permanent deal but unsurprisingly, this was not exercised.

Faubert only managed two appearances for Real Madrid during his half-season spell at the Bernabeu and returned to West Ham.

The winger was then transformed into a right-back and came good in the Championship, helping West Ham to promotion via the play-offs after an excellent personal season.

But Faubert will always be remembered for that bizarre loan move to Real Madrid during the 2008/09 season.
