West Ham United fought off competition from ‘several top clubs across the UK and Europe’ when they lured Northern Ireland wonderkid Joel Kerr to East London last summer.
Now, as he racks up the goals for the Hammers’ Under-18 side while captaining his country at youth level, it is becoming increasingly apparent why the teenager was a talent in such high demand.
Both within the Premier League and across the continent.
Paul Millar, the sporting director at Joel Kerr’s former side Glentoran, said West Ham were getting a ‘fantastic young footballer’. A ‘natural footballer with real quality’, to quote the NIFL Premiership side’s Head of Player Development, Andy Mathieson.
Have we left anyone out of our West Ham ACADEMY star XI?
Who do YOU think is the cream of the current youth team crop?
At the risk of piling unnecessary pressure on the 16-year-old, there are slight shades of Joe Cole in Joel Kerr. The similarities do not stop at their near-identical names. A box of tricks winger or attacking midfielder who uses his mesmerising footwork and his low centre of gravity to swivel away from opponents.
Wearing the number ten shirt, the same number Cole wore with pride for both Liverpool and Chelsea, Kerr dazzled as Glentoran faced West Ham’s youngsters back in 2024. A year later, the kid from County Tyrone is strutting his stuff in claret and blue these days, with ever-growing returns.
Joel Kerr is in superb form for West Ham United and Northern Ireland

While two-goal Chuk Obi stole the show for West Ham during their 4-1 thrashing of Leicester City in the U17 Premier League Cup this week, securing a semi-final spot in the process, it was Kerr who put the bow on the victory with a tap-in in stoppage time.
This means that by Hammers News’ count – and it can be difficult obtaining accurate numbers when it comes to Under-18s football – Kerr has scored seven goals in his last 11 games for club and country, going back to late-September.
While fellow forward Andre Dike unlocks Jarrod Bowen-esque finishing, cutting in from the right and whipping shots into the far corner with his left boot, Kerr has played an equally central role in West Ham’s superb end to 2025.
In the last few days alone, they put nine goals past Leicester and West Brom. A further eight were scored against Ipswich Town on one remarkable November day.
Glentoran chiefs explained what makes Kerr such a special talent
Kerr signed professional terms with the Hammers shortly after crossing the Irish sea. He has been described, by the club’s official website, as a ‘quick, dynamic wide player who is just as comfortable centrally [and] loves to dominate in one-v-one situations’.
Hence, the similarities with a certain Joe Cole.
George Earthy certainly is the best young prospect at West Ham. What more does he need to do for Nuno to give him game time?
“From an early age, Joel stood out as a real prospect. someone with undoubted ability and the mindset to match,” the aforementioned Mathieson explained.
“He’s worked incredibly hard on his game and always listened to the Academy staff. That blend of talent and mentality meant we always had high hopes for him. We’re excited to watch Joel continue his development at West Ham and we’ll be supporting him every step of the way.”
Mohamadou Kante and Callum Marshall earn Patrick Vieira and Harry Kane comparisons
A step up the ladder, at Under-21 level, Mohamadou Kante was likened to Arsenal icon Patrick Vieira this week.
This was not the first time Kante, a £500,000 signing from Paris FC in the summer of 2024, has been mentioned as the potential second coming of one of the Premier League’s greatest-ever midfielders.
“You’ve got Kante who’s just… wow,” Colchester coach Danny Cowley said after losing 1-0 to Greg Lincoln’s side in the EFL Trophy round-of-32. “A player like Patrick Vieira. Incredible athleticism and physicality.
Striker Callum Marshall has shades of Harry Kane too, according to Kevin Keen, West Ham United’s lead professional development phase coach.
“There’s a poacher instinct to him,” Keen told The Standard. “His goal in the Youth Cup final [when West Ham battered Arsenal 5-1 in 2023] sums it up. From probably about three or four yards, he’s got between bodies and volleyed it in.
“He’s also got that ability to score from near the edge of the box, a little bit like Harry Kane hits those low shots into far corners.”
