West Ham ace Declan Rice suggested that his side’s recent poor form is down to one thing – a lack of confidence, when speaking to the club’s official website.
The Hammers are currently in the midst of an atrocious run of form. They sit in 17th spot in the table, just one point clear of the drop zone, having won just two of their last 13 league outings.
Yesterday’s defeat to Leicester was the last straw for Manuel Pellegrini. The 66-year-old Chilean was axed after his side were beaten easily by the Foxes.
And the plain truth of the matter is that West Ham now have a real relegation battle on their hands.
Next up is Bournemouth at home on New Year’s day, and if the Hammers lose that, they could find themselves inside the bottom three at the start of 2020.
And Rice told WHUFC.com how a lack of confidence amongst the players is really making it hard for West Ham to win games at the moment:
“It’s confidence. You can’t win games without having confidence. At the start of the season, we had so much confidence and people were talking about us being top-six contenders but now, let’s be honest, that’s really far away. We need to be honest with ourselves, start picking up our confidence on the pitch and start playing football.”
It’s a catch 22 situation for West Ham. They can’t win games without any confidence. And they won’t gain confidence without winning games.
So something has to change. And at least the Hammers will have a new manager soon. Whoever it is cannot be worse than Pellegrini.
And maybe if West Ham beat Bournemouth on Wednesday, their fortunes will begin to change.
