David Moyes has got it all wrong with his comments aimed at West Ham United fans this week.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of the game against Manchester City, Moyes called on West Ham supporters to ‘get behind and stick with the team’ (Sky Sports).

Moyes meant well. It is just one of many straws he will inevitably clutch at over the next two months as the Hammers battle against relegation.

But the Scot has got it horribly wrong to even go there.

Fans the ONLY good thing about West Ham

Of the plethora of things wrong at West Ham, the fans certainly aren’t one of them.

Yes Moyes may just be trying to galvanise supporters who are protesting against owners David Sullivan and David Gold.

But that is to suggest those fans are not backing the side when it comes to game time.

The fact is West Ham fans have stuck by their train wreck of a club, not just during this dismal season. Indeed not just the last four years since the controversial move to the London Stadium – three of which have been spent fighting relegation.

West Ham fans have stuck by the team for the last 40 trophyless years.

Brief glimpses of brilliance and hope bogged down by the mediocre.

Claret and blue through thick and thin – and there’s been plenty of thin

The club where a lack of planning means the sublime is all too often – and quickly – followed by the ridiculous.

Witnessing time and again a lack of infrastructure which means momentum and promise are never sustained or fulfilled.

West Ham, the club where one injury derails an entire season.

West Ham have had the second highest number of season ticket holders (54,000+) for the last four seasons.

That’s despite many fans not wanting to leave Upton Park.

The club also features in the top 10 attendances in Europe.

So why Moyes – who has somehow conspired to make West Ham worse than they were under Manuel Pellegrini – thinks it is down to the fans to lift the team is anyone’s guess.

Moyes’s job to motivate players, not the fans

The Hammers faithful have done – and will continue to do – their part.

Their fierce loyalty should never be questioned. Yes they are a demanding bunch. But by the same token what they demand is not much; hard work, passion and to have a go.

The meek, pathetic lethargic way West Ham are currently ambling towards relegation doesn’t deserve extra special support.

But with West Ham fans that’s what the team will get.

The fans are the only good and consistent thing about West Ham.

Supporters certainly don’t need to be reminded to back their players by a manager who himself is failing miserably to inspire the same group.
