David Moyes was disappointed not to be offered a contract extension at West Ham
Moyes believes he did a good job keeping West Ham up and should have been given an interview at least.
But West Ham did not renew the former Everton and Manchester United boss’ contract, opting to appoint Manuel Pellegrini instead.
Moyes on his time at West Ham
Moyes arrived at West Ham in November, replacing Slaven Bilic and he was instructed to ensure relegation was avoided.
After a tough campaign, West Ham managed to find some form late in the season to escape the drop.
Moyes believes keeping West Ham afloat was the best possible job he could have done.
He said: “I have to say we couldn’t have done a better job. That’s why I was disappointed not to be offered the opportunity to stay.
“I’d taken it to the end of the season to see how I did and how the owners felt. From where they were to get them living and breathing again, was probably as successful a season as I could have had.”
‘I’d consider myself in the elite group of managers’
Moyes still has self-belief in his ability as a manager, citing his Premier League record as proof.
Looking ahead to the future and his next job, the former Sunderland boss said: “Only Sir Alex, Arsene Wenger and Harry Redknapp have won more games in the Premier League than me.
“I would still consider myself in the elite group of managers. If it was me against someone else I’d trust myself.
Did Moyes do a good job?
It is worth thanking Moyes for the job he did at West Ham. He was tasked to keep West Ham up and he did – just!
But is he the only manager that would have kept West Ham up at that time? No.
Moyes had more than half a season and a transfer window to earn enough points to stay up with a squad punching well below their weight.
I think most decent managers would have secured safety for the Irons.
The Scotsman wanted the spending power that Pellegrini had but his transfer business in January proved why he shouldn’t have been given funds.
Moyes shelled £10m on Jordan Hugill – a striker with a distinctly average goal scoring record in the Championship. He then signed Patrice Evra, a free agent past his peak who was on high wages.
And as for the myth that he “couldn’t have done a better job”; if West Ham had lost to Everton on the final day of the season, Moyes would statistically have had the worst managerial record in the history of the club.
While he did keep West Ham up, Moyes had a poor record at West Ham and claiming that he did a good job is not quite accurate.
