Charlie Nicholas backed West Ham to beat Southampton 2-1 in the Premier League on Saturday, when writing his regular prediction column for Sky Sports.

The Hammers are in real trouble at the moment. They are currently sitting in 18th spot in the Premier League table, one point adrift of safety.

The Saints meanwhile, have been on a decent run recently, and are sitting comfortably in 12th spot on 34 points.

West Ham desperately need three points against Southampton. If they fail to win the game, even the most ardent of Hammers fans will be anticipating relegation down to the Championship.

Charlie Nicholas told Sky Sports that he believes the east London outfit will record a vital victory against the south coast team at the London Stadium, however:

“David Moyes’ men were awful and scared at Manchester City, but went with a nothing-to-lose attitude at Liverpool. Southampton are tremendously dangerous on the counter-attack. I have a feeling that West Ham will open the relegation door wide open. What amount of points is required for safety? It will be interesting.”

West Ham have a decent record against Southampton. The Hammers have won their last four meetings with the Saints, and the south coast outfit have only won once away in east London since 2014.

The Hammers beat Southampton in the return fixture at St Mary’s in December last year.

And another win for David Moyes’s side on Saturday might just give the West Ham players the impetus they need to really kick on and finish the season in strong fashion.
