Albian Ajeti fails to score for Switzerland but 90 minutes will help his progress

West Ham striker Albian Ajeti failed to get on the scoresheet for Switzerland in their win over Gibraltar. But he got 90 minutes under his belt – something that will only help his progress as he aims to break into the Hammers first-team.

Ajeti started against Gibraltar in the Euro qualifier. Switzerland recorded an easy 4-0 win but Ajeti was not one of the scorers. The Irons’ summer signing could not get the ball in the net despite the Swiss having 40 shots on goal.

It was Ajeti’s second appearance of the international break. The 22-year-old was handed four minutes in Switzerland’s 1-1 draw with the Republic of Ireland in Dublin. It was a knee-jerk substitution after David McGoldrick’s late equaliser.

West Ham need Ajeti firing soon

While Ajeti was not able to add to his one international goal over the break, he got valuable minutes under his belt. Picking up 94 minutes in four days and taking his international cap tally to eight will only boost his chances of getting into West Ham’s team.

And the Hammers could need the ex-Basel striker to start firing soon. With Javier Hernandez gone and Michail Antonio injured, Ajeti is the only feasible alternative to Sebastien Haller up front.

The Switzerland forward was prolific at Basel but it might take him some time to adapt to life in England. He will now be hoping for his Premier League bow after being left on the bench in the past few games.
