Hello West Ham fans, not long now till the big day arrives in which West Ham face Cardiff in what promises to be a great start to the season.
But today I do not wish to talk about the league, I wish to talk about ‘the cup of dreams’ which is of course the FA cup. I am 16 years old so unfortunately I was not alive to witness the 1980 FA cup final where West Ham won 1-0 against Arsenal due to a Sir Trevor Brooking header where he looked to tie his shoelace and the ball hit his head, but nevertheless a goal is a goal never mind how it is scored!
West Ham have won the competition 3 times, 1964, 1975 and 1980. This is a very long time for no silverware and though West Ham are not the biggest club in the competition wigan won it last year so it begs the question do we care about cups? Yes stability in the premier league is vital but wouldn’t a cup run be perfect for the hammers to boost morale.
Last year we maybe got unlucky in the draw getting Manchester United in which we put up a good fight, but previous years have not been good enough. In 2006 we reached the final in which we lost on penalties (3-1) to liverpool in what was an exhilarating game for both teams finishing 3-3 after extra time. I still remember cup final day, I might of not went but I remember sitting down as a 9 year old watching watching my hero Dean Ashton walk out and score in the 28th minute! Also, who can forget Jamie Carragher’s own goal which put us ahead early on! It’s moments like this that make the memories needed for the fans and players to push on as a club and to proceed as a great club in English football!
We need to win the FA cup, and I really do believe we can do it with a decent draw and lots of support from the fans! Lastly I would just like to say I recently a West Ham development squad face the southend squad at roots hall and while we lost 1-0 I would like to say well done to the fans who turned up and made the great atmosphere that makes us debatably the best fans in the league! Thank you Hammers! Bring on the new season!
