Tim Steidten should be given the keys to the kingdom at West Ham, after a questionable decision from David Moyes.
West Ham United’s summer transfer window in 2023 was dominated by the sale of Declan Rice to Arsenal, and David Moyes and Tim Steidten did a good job replacing the 25-year-old England international.
After selling Rice for around £105 million eight months ago to the Gunners, Steidten led the Hammers charge by bringing in Edson Alvarez as the main replacement for Dec.
The fact that we got the Mexican was a real coup – he admitted himself just how close he was to joining Chelsea.

It could be argued that the 26-year-old defensive midfielder is our most important player. He is crucial to everything good we do as a team, and is the glue that holds us together as far as building up play from the back is concerned.
However, things could have been so different if Steidten hadn’t got his man, and Moyes secured the signing that he desperately wanted…
Steidten must have keys to the West Ham kingdom ahead of Moyes
The German must be backed to the hilt in the summer transfer window, and every single one after that for the foreseeable future!
Steidten has already proved his worth to West Ham and not just with the Alvarez signing. He spearheaded the moves to bring Mohammed Kudus and Konstantinos Mavropanos to the London Stadium as well.
I still think that the Mexico international was the standout signing though, as good as Kudus has undoubtedly been for us.
However, had Moyes got his way in the summer, things could have been very different for the Hammers…

Sofyan Amrabat was firmly on the West Ham radar before he ended up joining Manchester United on a season long loan instead.
The defensive midfielder has really struggled to establish himself at Old Trafford, and has been heavily criticised by the Italian media for some of his poor showings.
He has looked completely out of his depth at times – especially during Manchester United’s defeat to Manchester City earlier this month.
The fact that we didn’t sign him for £30 million plus is great news – how different things could have been for us had we brought the Moroccan to East London.
Back in June, Amrabat’s brother explained how much West Ham wanted to sign his sibling:
“Sofyan to West Ham an option but no, he wants to go to the top and his desire is to play in Spain. At Barcelona, he is high on the list but you know Barça’s financial situation. There are more clubs interested in Sofyan.”
Remember, Steidten didn’t move to the London Stadium until a month later, so Moyes had to be driving the interest in Amrabat.
And don’t forget back in 2022, Moyes told the Times just how impressed he was by the Morocco international midfielder during the World Cup out in Qatar:
“I’ve been impressed with the energy, attitude and quality of their holding midfielder, Sofyan Amrabat.”
The West Ham manager is quite clearly a huge fan of the 27-year-old Man United loanee and who knows, maybe he still is.
I think going forward that the West Ham board need to fully trust Steidten with transfers and if Moyes is to stay on, he should be made aware that his only responsibility is to coach the team.
Amrabat’s struggles with Man United and Alvarez being a huge success with the Hammers prove that the setup mentioned above is the best way forward for us as a club as far as I’m concerned.
