West Ham were linked with plenty of big-name strikers last summer.
They ended up signing Sebastien Haller from Eintracht Frankfurt for £45 million (BBC).
The Frenchman has struggled to establish himself with the Hammers, however, scoring just six goals in 26 games thus far (Transfermarkt).
Now, it is still far too early to write the 25-year-old off as a failure. He needs at least one full season to adjust to the frenetic pace of the Premier League.
But it still could be argued that West Ham signed the wrong man last summer.
According to reliable Hammers insider ExWHUemployee, the east London outfit were keen to sign Wissam Ben Yedder from Sevilla. The French hitman ended up moving to Monaco instead, however, for around £34 million (Bleacher Report).
So how has the 29-year-old got on since being linked with a move to West Ham last summer?
Well, Ben Yedder has been in sensational form for the Ligue 1 outfit since moving to France.
The Frenchman has scored 16 goals in 23 league games for Monaco so far this season (Transfermarkt).
He is leading Monaco’s charge for the top four, and they currently sit just three points adrift of the Champions League spots.
In those 23 outings, Ben Yedder has averaged 2.5 shots, 1.7 key passes and 1.3 dribbles per game. He has also chipped in with four assists (Who Scored).
The 29-year-old is definitely more mobile than Haller, and he is clearly more deadly in front of goal.
Perhaps West Ham made an error signing the 25-year-old instead of pursuing Ben Yedder?
It is probably still too early to say, but the early signs are that the Hammers might just have been better off with the Monaco man.
