West Ham face high flying Shrewsbury Town in a tricky tie in the 3rd Round of the FA Cup on Sunday here are 10 facts about you may not know about Sundays opponents

1. Shrewsbury were formed in 1886 at the Turf Hotel Shrewsbury.

2. Shrewsbury were admitted to the Football League in 1950 following the Football Leagues decision to extend the League from 88 teams to 92.

3. Shrewsbury have won the Welsh Cup 6 times a record for an English team.

4. Shrewsbury Town played at former ground Gay Meadow between 1910 and 2007, the ground was based between the River Severn and a Railway Junction. The site the ground was built on was famous for hosting Carnivals and Fairs, at one such event local stunt man Robert Cadman attempted to “fly” across the Severn using a rope attached to St Marys Church on one side of the river and a tree in Gay Meadow some 200 feet below. Sadly, for the stuntman the rope broke and he plunged to his death.

5. Current West Ham manager David Moyes played for Shrewsbury between 1987 and 1990 and Goalkeeper Joe Hart made over 50 league appearances for the Shrews before joining Manchester City in 2006.


6. Arthur Rowley the all-time League scorer in English football history finished his career with the Shropshire club scoring 152 league goals in 236 games and remain the clubs leading goal scorer to this day.

7. Current Shrewsbury Manager Paul Hirst played over 400 games for Rotherham United and played in the Rotherham side that beat Shrewsbury in the Shrews first ever appearance at Wembley in the Football League Trophy in 1996.

8. Former Hammer Jimmy Quinn managed the Shrews to promotion from the Conference in 2004.

9. Shrewsbury contest the A49 derby with local rivals Hereford, Hereford United went out of business in 2014, and with Phoenix club Hereford FC competing in the Southern League it will be sometime before this rivalry will re-ignited.

10. The two sides have only met 4 times in the club’s history West Ham winning twice and Shrewsbury winning twice. West Ham won the last meeting between the two clubs a 2-1 victory in February 1981.
