West Ham United star Manuel Lanzini has been snubbed by a former Hammer for Argentina’s Copa America squad.

The preliminary Argentina squad of 32 was announced on Wednesday afternoon (Football Italia).

Argentina, who have been coached by ex-West Ham fullback Lionel Scaloni since the departure of Jorge Sampaoli last year, will play in Group B alongside Colombia, Paraguay and Qatar.

But it appears brilliant playmaker Lanzini will not feature if the initial squad list is anything to go by.

Lanzini ‘dream’ in tatters

It comes after Lanzini failed to play any minutes following his call-up to the side during the last international break.

The reasons for the little Jewel’s omission are not yet clear. But it seems a particularly cruel snub.

Lanzini has spoken previously of his desire to play in the Copa America and make up for lost time with his national side.

“My dream is to play in the Copa America, it would feel like payback for me after I missed out on the World Cup,” Lanzini told whufc.com.

Scaloni decision perplexing

It could be that an agreement is in place to allow the player to properly recover this summer after a serious knee injury while training with Argentina before last summer’s World Cup ruled him out for most of the season.

If that is not the case Scaloni’s decision will perplex Hammers fans.

Particularly after Lanzini showed he is slowly getting back to his best for them as the season wore on, scoring in the final day 4-1 victory over FA Cup finalists Watford.

Hammers target, Spurs man and Man City star make the cut

This year’s Copa America takes place in Brazil and starts on June 14th.

The Argentina squad will be whittled down before the tournament begins. Lanzini is absent. But the selection does include reported Hammers target Nicolas Otamendi, Tottenham’s Justin Foyth, Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero and of course Lionel Messi.

Argentina preliminary Copa America squad: Armani, Andrada, Marchesin, Musso, Rulli, Saravia, Mercado, Otamendi, Pezzella, Kanemann, Tagliafico, Acuna, Funes Mori, Foyth, Paredes, Lo Celso, Palacios, G.
