When West Ham broke their transfer record to sign Felipe Anderson in the summer it did not go unnoticed.

A player of some repute in Italy, the skilful Brazilian was tipped to impress in the Premier League.

It has been a difficult start for the attacker so far, though.

Back-to-back defeats to start the season have not given him the best platform to perform.

But supporters were disappointed with his showing against Bournemouth.

The former Lazio man continually passed the ball backwards and sideways.

Pressure? What pressure?

Cherries fullback Adam Smith had Anderson in his pocket for much of the game.

And it was only late in the game with West Ham trailing 2-1 that he started to try and take on his man.

While it is far too early to write anyone off, Anderson’s £42 million price tag has raised a few eyebrows.

With that kind of outlay comes the added pressure and expectation.

But the player himself told the Evening Standard he welcomes the pressure and does not feel it is a burden.

“It has been wonderful (since I arrived at West Ham),” Anderson told the Evening Standard.

“It’s been better than I expected because I always believed it was going to be the best place to play football. Since I arrived, that’s been confirmed. I was very well welcomed by the new teammates, the manager and the whole club. I’m very happy here.

‘I hope to return that confidence’

“(Being the club record signing) shows that they have confidence in your football and your work. That gives you more confidence to work.

“Knowing that everyone trusts you and your talent is something that everyone likes. I hope to return that confidence to prove my work on the pitch.”

Anderson will likely thrive once West Ham settle into their new system under Manuel Pellegrini.

Fans must remember while £42 million is huge money for West Ham, it is relative small fry in the crazy modern transfer market.

It must also be noted he has left a team in Lazio that has been challenging for the Champions League places in Serie A with arguably better players around him.

So the boy from Brazil will need time.

Give him that and there is a lot to come from this exciting forward.
