West Ham United star Declan Rice has admitted his frustration at not having had the chance to play alongside Dimitri Payet.
Payet is undoubtedly one of the best players to have graced West Ham.
But his acrimonious departure sullied his name with Hammers fans.
The French wizard effectively downed tools to force a return to Marseille three years ago. And it came just months after he was made one of the highest paid players in West Ham’s history and received a £1million loyalty bonus payment (Telegraph).
Dimitri Payet: A legend sullied
The truth is West Ham have struggled to replace him since.
Some fans dub Payet ‘le snake’ for his actions. But others have mellowed over time, preferring instead to look back at the brilliant memories he left them with.
One such fan did just that on Twitter this week with a video of Payet’s best West Ham moments and the caption ‘The streets won’t forget’.
And West Ham star Rice responded to the compilation admitting his Payet regret.
Declan admits Payet regret
“Gutted I never had the chance to play with Dimi,” Rice said on Twitter with a ‘fuming’ emoji.
The post received a mixed response.
Several Chelsea and Irish fans seized the opportunity to have a pop at the West Ham midfield star.
Some Chelsea fans implored him to join Marseille instead of the Blues after recent transfer links.
And the Ireland supporters suggested Payet and Rice had similar traits after the Hammers man switched international allegiance to England.
But West Ham fans had Declan’s back, fighting off the trolls with that famous East End wit.
Hammers fans defend Rice from trolls and have their say on Payet
And many admitted they too would have loved to see Rice and Payet play together in the claret and blue.
Here are a selection of responses from West Ham fans on Twitter.
Even after he did what he did, he was still the best player I’ve seen play for us ( hardly remember Di Canio as i was young )

Guy was absolutely filth. Best player we’ve had since Di canio. Literally could decide on his own wether we’d win or lose. Guy was a genius. So sad the way it ended. 😔
