West Ham signing 31-year-old Argentina international centre-back on a free would be very wise after Issa Diop blow

West Ham heave been dealt a huge blow with the news that Issa Diop is set to miss the rest of the season with an Achilles injury.

Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma are already out injured leaving Craig Dawson as the only senior centre-back option at David Moyes’s disposal.

Moyes does have the option of moving Declan Rice back into central defence. We feel as though we would miss him way too much in the middle of the park though.

Moving Rice into the back four really shouldn’t even be on Moyes’s radar.

The West Ham boss could also decide to promote either Aji Alese or Jamal Baptiste from the under-23s. That would come along with a huge risk, however, considering the fact that neither of them have played in games with any kind of high importance at senior level.

There is another option for the Hammers though…

West Ham could sign free agent after Issa Diop blow

There is one centre-back in particular currently available on a free transfer who we believe could be a really useful option for the Hammers on a short-term deal.

Six-capped Argentina international Mateo Musacchio is currently a free agent after his release from Lazio.

The 31-year-old has played for Villarreal, AC Milan and most recently Lazio throughout his career, so he is very highly experienced in playing football at an elite level for a prolonged period of time.

Musacchio is a tenacious tackler and a very good reader of the game. His playing style is quintessentially South American what with the aggression and passion that he shows on the pitch.

Standing at 6ft tall, he isn’t the tallest of centre-backs. The Argentinian ace is brilliant with the ball at his feet though and has decent pace.

Signing Musacchio on a free transfer up until the end of the season seems like an absolute no-brainer for West Ham after the Issa Diop injury blow.

It just makes total sense whatever way you look at it. Whether Moyes is open to dipping into the free agent market remains to be seen though…
