There were very few fans moaning when West Ham got rid of Lucas Perez in the summer.
At the time, West Ham fans were sold dreams of new strikers coming in. Perez left alongside Marko Arnautovic, Andy Carroll, Javier Hernandez and Jordan Hugill. But only two new strikers came in.
While West Ham struggle for striker depth and a partner for Sebastien Haller, Perez is thriving. Back in the familiar La Liga environment and playing in a lower-intensity league, the Spaniard has found his shooting boots.
Perez has scored five goals in his last five games. And West Ham fans are astounded at footage of his latest strike. Perez plays a one-two before curling a beautiful left-footed shot into the top corner against Atletico Madrid.
Lucas Perez: Good or bad decision to get rid?
This video clip has been doing the rounds in the West Ham circles of social media. It has prompted much debate surrounding the decision to let him go in the summer. In hindsight, seen as West Ham did not replace him, some fans are saying he should have stayed.
But others point to the fact he wanted a Spain return. And that his playing style did not suit Manuel Pellegrini’s approach. Here are some tweets regarding this debate.
Rated him as a 4th choice striker. We’re missing him and Hernandez in our squad this season. Oh well.. #OnwardsAndUpwards

It’s weird. He could hardly kick a ball straight for us but he’s clearly revitalised.

He didn’t want to be in London for anything other than a paycheck. He’s where he belongs; lower half in Spain scoring an occasionally nice goal. Good for him.
