Roberto has attracted criticism after West Ham’s 3-2 loss against Newcastle United.
West Ham went 3-0 down at home to struggling Newcastle in yet another embarrassing match. There were plenty of players underperforming and Roberto was one who received a lot of stick.
The Spaniard joined in the summer on a free transfer, replacing Adrian as Lukasz Fabianski’s back-up goalkeeper. But while Adrian failed to play a league game last season, Fabianski’s injury this season threw Roberto into the deep end.
Unconvincing Roberto

West Ham fans were already sceptical about Roberto after his performances in pre-season and in the EFL Cup. He shipped four goals against Oxford United so fans were justifiably nervous about having him between the sticks.
The 33-year-old has done little to ease these worries either. West Ham have not won a game since Roberto took Fabianski’s place in goal and he has been shaky.
Roberto was particularly slammed for allowing Jonjo Shelvey’s long-range free-kick to catch him out for Newcastle’s third. He was equally flat-footed when Lys Mousset beat him.
Here are some tweets after Roberto’s performance against the Magpies.
