West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini decided to leave Issa Diop out of the squad on Wednesday night.
In the 2-0 loss against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Diop was not even on the bench. He has not only lost his place in the starting line-up but he has also lost his spot on the bench.
Diop was serving a ban against Chelsea, prompting Pellegrini to start with Fabian Balbuena and Angelo Ogbonna. After keeping a clean sheet, Balbuena and Ogbonna continued against Wolves.
Diop omission was tactical
But there was no space on the bench for Diop. According to reliable insider EXWHUEmployee, this was a tactical decision rather than an injury. Instead of having a centre-back on the bench, Pellegrini was ready to drop Declan Rice back if there was an injury.
West Ham fans were shocked by this decision. It would mean losing the best holding midfielder to move him into the defence. And Carlos Sanchez would have replaced Rice, immediately weakening the midfield.
Diop has not been at his best in recent weeks but he should still have been on the bench. Here are some tweets about it.
Says it all! #pellegriniout

There is no reason for Zabaleta being on the bench, ever.

Terrible decision in my opinion.
If a CB gets injured it means we lose our best midfielder and replace him with Sanchez… 🤯🤯🤯
I also believe Diop would be a better option in midfield ahead of Sanchez.

This sounds bad. What’s going on with him?

He should be on the bench instead of Sanchez or Zabaleta
