The man launching a rescue bid for Bolton Wanderers has revealed he has been handed £25million by West Ham United co-owner David Sullivan.
The proposed takeover of Bolton Wanderers by the former Watford owner Laurence Bassini hit the buffers recently (The Guardian).
Bolton issued a club statement saying “no further discussions will be entered into on the matter with him”.
Sullivan gives friend £25m to buy Bolton
Now it has emerged West Ham co-owner Sullivan has given Bassini £25million to aid his bid to buy the Trotters.
Speaking on The Jim White Show on talkSPORT Bassini made the revelation.
“Dave Sullivan, who I’ve known since I was a child, called me and said look Laurence you’re going to need some help because you’re getting slaughtered out there,” Bassini told talkSPORT on Friday morning.
“He said ‘I’m going to give you the money so you can go and do this’. He said ‘I’m going to give you £25million so you can go and sort yourself out, which he’s done.”
Bassini confirmed the money from Sullivan has formed the vast majority of his new £28m bid for Bolton.
It comes as billionaire Sullivan and fellow West Ham co-owner David Gold find themselves under scrutiny from their own fans over transfer business.
Sullivan under scrutiny for reportedly baulking at striker fees
West Ham spent £100m on new signings after appointing Manuel Pellegrini last summer.
And West Ham started the current window in similar ambitious fashion capturing exciting Spain star Pablo Fornals for around £24m.
The Hammers have allowed striker trio Andy Carroll, Lucas Perez and Marko Arnautovic to leave.
But West Ham are struggling to bring in any replacements if reports are to be believed.
Moves for Maxi Gomez, Sebastien Haller, Callum Wilson and Moussa Marega look doomed.
The Gomez deal in particular was said to have failed after West Ham tried to negotiate paying the £45million release clause in instalments (The Sun).
Some Hammers fans left fuming
As a result of the revelation that Sullivan has handed someone a cool £25m to buy another English football club, fans are fuming.
One would assume Sullivan has only loaned Bassini the £25m.
But it has left some West Ham supporters angry given what is deemed by some as penny-pinching in the transfer market when it comes to signing top quality strikers to help the Hammers compete for European football.
Here are a selection of responses to the revelation on Twitter.
Hope Bolton get something sorted but this seems to be a conflit of interests for David Sullivan.
