West Ham target Jonjo Shelvey delivered an inevitable blow to his boyhood club yesterday.
Returning to East London, Shelvey scored a free-kick and outclassed the West Ham midfield. This was a double blow for the Irons as Shelvey seems to be constantly linked with a move to The London Stadium.
Shelvey admitted he nearly moved to West Ham in an interview back in August (via The Chronicle). The occasional England international was struggling for game time at Newcastle United and a move to West Ham was on the cards.
Shelvey nets free-kick
The central midfielder grew up as a West Ham fan. There were concerns over his fitness and his form but West Ham were reportedly interested in handing him a lifeline. Predictably, the decision to ignore this transfer came back to bite the Hammers.
Shelvey produced an impressive individual display after regaining his spot in the Newcastle line-up. This was capped with a 30-yard free-kick, although Roberto should have done much better with it.
After the game, West Ham fans dug up the old Shelvey links. Here are some of the best tweets.
We could sure do with him, that’s for sure…

Remember when David Sullivan publicly slated Jonjo Shelvey?
Once again was a level above any of our midfielders & would walk into our team. One of the best passers of the ball in the league with both feet & was instrumental for Newcastle today.
