West Ham United legend Tony Cottee has called on new star Sebastien Haller to end the club’s striker farce.
Haller became West Ham’s record signing when he joined for £45million in the summer (BBC Sport).
And the French forward has got his Hammers career off to a great start, impressing with his strength, agility, hold-up play and most important goalscoring exploits bagging three goals in as many games so far.
The fast start has sparked hopes among West Ham fans Haller can be the man to spearhead a challenge on the European places.
West Ham’s long wait for an accomplished goalscorer
No West Ham player has scored 20 or more during West Ham’s time in the top flight since John Hartson 22 years ago in the 1997/98 campaign. Super John bagged 24 in all competitions that season.
Marlon Harewood hit 22 in all competitions in the 2004/5 season but that was in the Championship.
Paolo Di Canio has scored the most goals for West Ham during their time in the Premier League since, registering 17 in all competitions in 1999/2000.
Now legendary Hammers striker Cottee has called on Haller to end the club’s farcical drought of consistent goalscorers (talkSPORT).
Legend Cottee calls on Haller to end ‘ridiculous’ drought
“The best one (of Haller’s goals so far) for me was the one at Watford from three yards out,” Cottee told Alan Brazil’s Sports Breakfast.
“Because it’s an art. To be a goalscorer and (get in the positions) to score from three yards (is an art). People say ‘oh well it’s lucky’ but it’s not, it’s an art, you’re getting in the position and there’s no-one near you… and that’s because you’ve got a football brain to get in that position.
“He got an overhead kick goal against Watford and everyone was raving about it.
‘He’s got a chance, he’s started brilliantly’
“I was more interested in the first goal because it was a tap-in from three yards. If you get 15 tap-ins a season, get your 15 league goals then you’re on your way to getting your 20 league goals maybe.
“No-one has done it at West Ham for many, many years I think I was the last player to do it (1986/87 season) 30-odd years ago, it’s ridiculous, 20 league goals!? Someone needs to do that at West Ham to kick them on. I think in Haller, early days – let’s not get carried away – he’s got a chance, he’s started brilliantly.”
Let’s hope so TC, let’s hope so.
