Alassane Plea tore Shakhtar Donetsk to shreds last night, scoring a hat-trick and providing an assist during Borussia Monchengladbach’s excellent 6-0 Champions League win. And West Ham will surely be regretting not having signed the Frenchman on two previous occasions when they had the chance to do so.
In other news…West Ham to hurt Tottenham with Moyes reportedly eyeing January swoop for £28m ace?
Back in 2016, the Hammers reportedly wanted the Borussia Monchengladbach hitman (Le10Sport).
West Ham were again linked with Plea in the summer 2018 when Manuel Pellegrini took over (The Sun).
The Hammers bid £27m (Sky Sports) but the striker opted for a move to Borussia Monchengladbach instead.
And Plea has been a real hit in Germany. The 27-year-old has racked up four goals and four assists in eight games for Gladbach this season.
He was in truly sensational form last night, scoring a devastating hat-trick and providing an assist as his team swept aside Shakhtar Donetsk with an incredible 6-0 away win in the Champions League.
And how we could have done with Plea at the London Stadium.
The Frenchman possesses blistering pace. The Gladbach ace doesn’t stop working for the team, and as he proved last night, he can be absolutely clinical in front of goal as well.
£27 million would have been a small price to pay for Plea. The 27-year-old would have been the ideal foil for Sebastien Haller and could have coaxed the best out of his fellow countryman.
He obviously has something about him with Bild having recently reported that Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester United were all keen to sign him.
It’s very much a case of what might have been now, however. And West Ham cannot afford to make the same mistake again next time a talented young striker becomes available.
