The new Vieira? David Moyes might just have brilliant DM solution right under his nose at West Ham

Issa Diop returned to the West Ham team a few weeks ago.

The Frenchman has impressed although his performances certainly haven’t been infallible.

One big criticism of the 24-year-old Hammers ace is his poor concentration. He sometimes dozes off at key times during games. And when you’re playing at centre-back, that absolutely cannot ever happen.

With that in mind, perhaps Diop’s future could lie elsewhere in another position.

Could Issa Diop play in defensive midfield for West Ham?

The 24-year-old certainly possesses the physical profile needed to play in the middle of the park.

Standing at 6ft 4in tall, Diop is a powerful specimen. He has plenty of pace and athleticism. The West Ham ace is actually similar to Arsenal and France legend Patrick Vieira what with his languid running style.

Now, we are not for one minute suggesting that Diop could become the midfielder that Vieira was.

He could perform a similar role to that of the Premier League great, however.

Diop showcased what he is capable of against Leeds last night with a couple of lung busting runs from the back, carrying the ball into the opponent’s half.

The 24-year-old, signed from Toulouse for £25 million in the summer of 2018 (The Express), certainly has a lot of talent. We have seen it on numerous occasions before.

Perhaps central defence isn’t his best position, however.

David Moyes could have defensive midfield powerhouse sitting right under his nose

Moving him into the middle of the park would certainly reduce the risk of his concentration levels costing us dearly.

And who knows? Diop could excel in central midfield.

It would also mean that David Moyes would not be in such desperate need to sign another DM in the summer.

With the likes of Frederik Alves, Aji Alese and Jamal Baptiste coming through the ranks at the London Stadium, West Ham are incredibly well stocked in the centre-back department.

Perhaps switching Diop in central midfield would take the Frenchman to another level. It would certainly be interesting to see, that’s for sure.
