Jeff Stelling admitted that he got it wrong about West Ham United’s squad depth, when speaking on Sky Sports’ Gillette Soccer Saturday today (Saturday February, 27th, 12:08pm).
The Hammers have enjoyed an incredible season so far.
We are currently sitting in fourth spot in the Premier League table and will only drop outside the top four if Chelsea beat Manchester United tomorrow.
David Moyes has worked wonders since taking over at the London Stadium for the second time in December 2019.
The Scot really has performed miracles by guiding West Ham into fourth spot this season, considering our woeful lack of strength in depth.
Jeff Stelling admits he got it wrong about West Ham
We have one striker, three central midfielders and little cover in both full-back positions.
Jeff Stelling told Sky Sports’ Gillette Soccer Saturday today (Saturday February, 27th, 12:08pm) that he got it completely wrong regarding West Ham’s squad depth:
“I suggested a week or so ago that West Ham had a bit of strength in depth. A number of West Ham pointed out to me that they are really worried about their squad depth. Looking at their substitutes today. They’ve only named eight subs and two of them are goalkeepers. The fans were right and I was wrong, and maybe that could cost them a top four place.”
David Moyes absolutely must strengthen his squad at the London Stadium in the summer.
Much will depend upon whether the West Ham are owners are prepared to back him in the transfer market, however.
The Hammers need to sign two centre-forwards, at least one central midfielder, a left wing-back and a top class goalkeeper, bare minimum.
It remains to be seen whether the owners have the ambition needed to make that happen, however.
