Sky Sports (Transfer Show, Monday August 31st, 17:21 ) claimed last night that West Ham boss David Moyes ideally wants to sign a new centre-back and strengthen his attacking options this summer.
In other news…Report: West Ham player has really impressed Moyes and is in line for key role
The Scot desperately needs to bolster his ranks at the London Stadium this summer. In an ideal world, the Hammers boss would have plentiful funds to splash out.
We all know that’s not the case, however. And the 57-year-old must sell before he can buy.
Nevertheless, Sky Sports reckon the West Ham boss is after a centre-back and further attacking reinforcements this summer.
That simply doesn’t make sense, however.
It is clear for every single Hammers fan to see that our absolute priority should be a new left-back. Aaron Cresswell has regressed badly over the past 12 months or so. And the 30-year-old is an absolute liability every time he plays for West Ham.
Trouble on the horizon
And if he is starting week in week out for us next season, we will have big problems. Someone like Brentford’s Rico Henry should be right at the very top of Moyes’s wish-list this summer.
Bearing that in mind, Sky Sports’ report claiming that signing a new left-back isn’t even a priority for Moyes is quite simply baffling.
Sure, we could do with more attacking talent. You can never have too much quality. But with Jarrod Bowen, Felipe Anderson, Grady Diangana, Michail Antonio, Sebastien Haller and Andriy Yarmolenko, we should have more than enough.
Having limited funds is frustrating. But it shouldn’t stop Moyes strengthening where he needs to most.
And if the Scot doesn’t bring a new left-back to the London Stadium this summer, we can all expect a long and very difficult Premier League campaign next season.
