West Ham United star Ryan Fredericks has leapt to the defence of teammate Roberto Jimenez Gago.
West Ham fans have been in meltdown after star player Lukasz Fabianski was injured in the draw at Bournemouth on Saturday.
Speculation has suggested the undisputed Hammers number one goalkeeper will miss at least two months with a hip injury (Sky Sports).
That has left West Ham supporters fearing the worst given the unconvincing performances of understudy Roberto so far this season.
West Ham fans going gaga over Gago
The Spaniard arrived on a free in the summer alongside third choice goalkeeper David Martin.
His showings in pre-season were a cause for concern.
And the 33-year-old’s woeful display in the 4-0 Carbao Cup embarrassment at Oxford United last week have raised serious question marks over his ability to perform at the top level.
West Ham are flying high in the Premier League and supporters fear having Roberto in goal could cost them dearly.
Fredericks leaps to Roberto’s defence
But defender Ryan Fredericks has leapt to the defence of his under fire teammate in an interview with the club’s official website.
“We’ve got more than enough confidence in him, we see it in training every day,” Fredericks told whufc.com.
“He’s a mountain of a man, commanding the box well. He’s loud and has more than enough experience to take it into the next few games if that’s the case. It’s good to have a goalkeeper who’s loud and commanding as it keeps you on your toes and instils confidence in the back four, which is good.
“He’s a big lad. He’s a nice guy and a good goalkeeper, most importantly.”
Hammers fans must give Roberto their backing
So there you have it West Ham fans, perhaps Roberto just needs a chance to prove his worth.
Yes he is not on the same level as Fabianski. Few are.
But he is an experienced goalkeeper who has the trust of Pellegrini and his teammates.
Now it is time to show the true West Ham way, getting behind your own in times of adversity.
