Report: West Ham could miss out on key David Moyes target to Newcastle

According to a report from Football Insider, West Ham and Celtic could be blown out of the water by Newcastle in the race to sign Brighton centre-back Shane Duffy.

The Daily Record claimed  earlier this week that the Hammers and the Hoops want to sign the 28-year-old defender, with David Moyes allegedly prepared to spend £5 million to bring him to the London Stadium.

It seems like both clubs will now have to compete with the Magpies for Duffy, however.

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce will be keen to bolster his defensive ranks at St James’ Park this summer. And the same can be said of David Moyes at the London Stadium and Neil Lennon at Parkhead.

Football Insider reckon that Bruce has identified Duffy as a top target this summer.

And with West Ham’s financial problems, the Toon’s alleged interest in the 33-capped Republic of Ireland international will be an obvious issue for us.

Defenders needed at the London Stadium

Centre-back is clearly an area where David Moyes needs to strengthen. The Hammers conceded 62 goals in the Premier League last term.

And Shane Duffy would be a very useful addition for West Ham.

But in order to compete with Newcastle for the 28-year-old’s signature, Moyes must sell some players, and fast.

The Hammers seem to be falling behind those in and around them in the Premier League table already this summer.

And missing out on Duffy to Newcastle would be further evidence of that.
