According to a report from the Sun, West Ham will have to pay £20 million if they want to sign Manchester United defender Phil Jones in January.

The versatile Red Devils defender was linked with a move to the London Stadium from Old Trafford throughout the summer transfer window.

The Mirror claimed back in July that Hammers boss David Moyes wanted to sign Jones.

And ExWHUemployee confirmed those claims.

The Scot did end up strengthening his defensive ranks, but only by bringing in Craig Dawson from Watford on loan.

West Ham will surely be looking to make a more permanent addition in the defensive department in January, however.

And the Sun claims that it will cost the Hammers £20 million if they want to prise Phil Jones away from Manchester United. It is claimed that the 28-year-old has no future under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Old Trafford.

Let’s be honest here, however. We really should be going nowhere near Phil Jones.

And certainly not for that price.

The 28-year-old is incredibly injury prone. And there is clearly a reason why Ole is allegedly so desperate to get rid of him.

Jones has 27 caps for England to his name. And he was undoubtedly a very good defender. But his time has passed. West Ham should be looking at young, up and coming defenders.

The Hammers need to have a vision and a plan in place if we are to make genuine progress over the next few years.

And signing Jones for £20 million from Manchester United will certainly feel like a backwards step.
