Report claims West Ham bid for £18m ace could be imminent

According to a report from Argentinian media outlet El Intransigente, West Ham are expected to make a bid for River Plate right-back Gonzalo Montiel imminently.

Hammers boss David Moyes will be keen to bring a new right-back to the London Stadium this summer.

Ryan Fredericks has been poor since joining West Ham on a free transfer in the summer of 2018.

Ben Johnson has made an exciting breakthrough, but the 20-year-old needs some proper competition next season.

And El Intransigente claims that the Hammers have their eye on a move for River Plate ace Gonzalo Montiel.

West Ham are allegedly ready to make an £11.3 million bid for the South American defender, but River could demand that the east London outfit pay his full £18 million release clause.

The Argentina international has racked up three assists in 20 league appearances for River this season (Transfermarkt).

In those 20 league outings, the 23-year-old has won 1.5 aerial duals on average per game. He has also averaged two tackles, 1.2 interceptions and 1.3 clearances in those matches.

Montiel is a tough tackling right-back and his playing style is quintessentially South American. That makes him ideally suited to the robust nature of the frenetically-paced Premier League.

The problem for David Moyes is that he has limited funds to play with this summer…if any at all.

So the Scot will have to sell before he can buy. And if he manages to do just that, Montiel would be a fine addition for West Ham.
