West Ham United are expected to reignite their interest in Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez this summer.

And in doing so they will be bidding for a full-fledged international goalscorer.

That’s after the 22-year-old scored his first ever goal for Uruguay on Monday.

Gomez scored his maiden international goal in the 88th minute to round off a 4-o win over Thailand in the China Cup final.

Maxi finally off the mark for Uruguay

It came after 11 appearances for Uruguary. And it was not the most breathtaking goal, the striker getting a poor connection on a shot from the edge of the box which took a big deflection before going in.

But that will matter little to the Celta star who will be glad to finally get off the mark for his country.

And Gomez reacted to the landmark career moment on Twitter after the game.

‘Very happy and grateful’

“Very happy and grateful to my companions for the usual support,” Gomez said on Twitter.

“Happy for the first goal with the Uruguary national team, the prettiest.”

West Ham United were reportedly close to signing Maxi Gomez from Celta Vigo in January.

The Hammers had been rocked by Mark Arnautovic’s revelation that he wanted to leave for China.

But West Ham refused to do business at anything less than £50 million.

Gomez goal drought a worry for West Ham?

Arnautovic’s replacement, if reports are to be believed, would have been Gomez.

he Austrian remained in East London, though, pocketed an improved deal and Uruguay star Gomez remained in Spain.

Reports after deadline day said West Ham would return for the £45 million rated 22-year-old in the summer (Sky Sports).

And it appears the player himself may have had his head turned by the interest.

Since West Ham courted Gomez in January he has scored just once in 13 games for his club.

Hammers boss Manuel Pellegrini will undoubtedly have been keeping an eye on Gomez.

It will be interesting to see if the Chilean returns for his fellow South American come the summer.
