Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has referred to West Ham United as a mediocre midtable Premier League team.

Insider’s shock Benrahma claim is not good news for West Ham teammate

Scholes clearly referenced West Ham and Southampton as he delivered his verdict on Man United’s Champions League exit following defeat to RB Leipzig on Tuesday night.

West Ham surrendered a 1-0 lead against the Red Devils at the weekend to lose 3-1.

Scholes calls West Ham mediocre

And Man United tried but failed to launch a comeback against Leipzig, clawing back two goals having been 3-0 down.

After the game Scholes aimed a dig at the likes of West Ham on BT Sport.

“Manchester United can come back against mediocre, mid-table teams in England,” Scholes said on BT Sport.

“But there’s a difference (in quality between them and Champions League clubs.”

Scholes may have been frustrated seeing his team crash out of Europe’s top competition.

Oh the irony

But the irony of calling West Ham mediocre was clearly lost on him.

If West Ham are mediocre then what does that make Man United?

The Hammers absolutely battered Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side for over an hour and should have been at least three goals up at half-time.

Only poor finishing from West Ham allowed Man United off the hook.

And the only reason the visitors got back into the game was due to the farcical decision to allow Paul Pogba’s equaliser to stand after the ball had clearly gone out of play beforehand.

Throw in the fact that West Ham will go fifth in the table and back above Man United with a win over Leeds on Friday night and Scholes’s comments start to look somewhat delusional.

If West Ham are average then what does that make Manchester United?

West Ham look a quality, competitive side this season.

Under former Man United boss David Moyes, the Hammers have scored just one less goal than Man United, have a better defensive record and a better goal difference.

Perhaps Scholes needs to think before he speaks in future.

If West Ham are mediocre then the Premier League really is the strongest in the world.

The Hammers would have put up a better fight against Leipzig than Man United did that’s for sure.
