The Hammers have become a team well-renowned for robbing their opponents of possession and hitting them hard and fast on the counter attack.

The playing philosophy has served Moyes and West Ham really well over the past 12 months or so.

The Hammers finished in sixth spot in the Premier League table last season and subsequently qualified for the Europa League.

Pablo Fornals shares key change David Moyes has made

If West Ham are to compete on all fronts this season, not only do we need our star players to maintain their fitness but we also need to vary the way in which we play.

The system that the Hammers used to beat Newcastle may well not work against the better sides or teams from the continent.

And Fornals opened up to the Guardian on Moyes’s shift in playing style of late:

“Recently we’ve been playing out from the back more, maybe having more possession but without losing the essence of our game: rob possession, launch quick attacks and be compact defensively, make life difficult for the opposition.”

That really is unlike David Moyes. But good luck to him for evolving in an ever changing, cut-throat industry at 58 years of age.

There have been numerous instances of West Ham playing out from the back this season.

It’s not kamikaze style, however, like some teams seem to do it. If there isn’t an option, our defenders make a long pass, and there is nothing wrong with that.

West Ham really have played some great stuff this season.

Pablo Fornals’ goals against Leicester and Crystal Palace were probably the pick of the bunch.

And the fact that Moyes has instilled two different ways of playing into his team should stand us in great stead this season.
