With success comes scrutiny and that’s exactly what is about to happen to West Ham United.

Ferdinand lauds Moyes and says he has transformed three West Ham players

Success is all relative in football.

But West Ham are undoubtedly a success story under David Moyes since football returned after the first lockdown.

Since we got football back, West Ham have played 18 games this season and last, winning seven, drawing five and losing six.

Moyes’s men have amassed 26 points in that spell scoring nearly two goals a game.

Moyes has overseen dramatic West Ham turnaround

It is quite the turnaround.

West Ham’s fine form has secured the club’s best start to a season for five years.

And as a result of Southampton’s draw with Wolves, the Hammers could go fifth with a win over Aston Villa this weekend as the season passes the quarter-way stage.

West Ham have been flying under the radar somewhat.

Fans have been happy to let the likes of Leeds, Villa, Everton and the Saints take the limelight as West Ham quietly go about their business.

West Ham’s fine start has shifted the narrative

But back-to-back wins over Fulham and Sheffield United – the type of games West Ham would have lost in previous seasons – have shifted the narrative.

Talk of survival and relegation battles has been replaced by talk of the top six.

And it’s not coming from West Ham.

Danny Murphy told Match of the Day on Sunday that the Hammers are serious top six contenders.

Now Sky Sports have suggested West Ham could break into the Premier League’s elite this season.

“Are West Ham dark horses for a top six spot this season?” Sky Sports Premier League put to its near 5.5 million followers after the win over the Blades.

No hiding for Hammers but fans keen to keep flying under the radar

The post was met with some predictable ridicule and scoffing from rival fans.

But there were also many who have been impressed by what they’ve seen from Moyes’s side.

It was West Ham fans, however, who seemed most keen to play it down.

And who can blame them. With the pressure off West Ham are growing in confidence and stature.

Moyes is developing a young, energetic side and the last thing they need is to be weighted down with expectation.

West Ham must ignore any hype coming their way. Embrace the praise by all means but stick to the path Moyes continues to lay and they will undoubtedly surprise many.
