Mystery surrounds West Ham United star Andriy Yarmolenko after his no-show in the curtain raiser against Manchester City.

West Ham were drubbed 5-0 by the reigning champions at the London Stadium.

It is an all too familiar feeling for Hammers fans.

Not just against City but in the opening game of the season. It follows the thrashing at Liverpool in last term’s opener and the humiliation against Manchester United the season before that.

Groundhog day for Hammers?

Another all too familiar feeling for West Ham supporters is seeing key players injured.

Manuel Pellegrini had to endure the worst injury record in the Premier League last season.

One player missing for most of it was Ukrainian attacker Yarmolenko after a serious Achilles tear.

The player told the club’s official website he hoped to be like a new signing this season after working his way back to fitness.

Mystery over Yarmolenko

He was named as a substitute for the game against City.

But the winger then failed to appear on the bench.

There has been no word from the club or press over the reason why.

And that has sparked fears amongst fans Yarmolenko has suffered a setback in his comeback.

Fans fear injury setback

A picture of the original West Ham teamsheet shows Yarmolenko was selected among the subs only to be replaced come game time by Carlos Sanchez.

It remains to be seen whether West Ham will offer an update on Yarmolenko this week.

Pellegrini is sure to be asked the question in the build-up to Saturday’s game at Brighton.
