West Ham youngster Joe Powell has been training with the first-team ahead of the Southampton clash.
The Hammers travel to the south coast this weekend for a relegation six-pointer against Southampton. This could effectively be the game that keeps Manuel Pellegrini in the job or gets him sacked.
Pellegrini was running the rule over Powell in the training session leading up to the game. The left-footed midfielder was given his chance to show his worth and he was captured by the club’s official photographer.
First-team chance for Powell?
Powell has been in great form for West Ham’s U23 team this season. The 21-year-old has scored seven goals in competitive games this season. He has also provided a number of assists, especially from set-pieces.
Nathan Holland has recently enjoyed a promotion to the first-team. The exciting young winger has come off the bench in the last two games for the Hammers. This will provide encouragement for Powell to do the same.
Powell has played one game for West Ham, coming on as a substitute in the 8-0 win over Macclesfield Town last season. He provided two assists in a short space of time that evening so he definitely has some talent.
It is unlikely that he will be in the squad this weekend with Pellegrini fighting for his job. But if he impresses in training, he could follow Holland’s example and earn a permanent promotion.
