Just when West Ham fans didn’t think things could get much worse came a painful reminder of their recent past.

West Ham supporters are disconsolate at the moment after their latest defeat, a woeful 3-0 humbling at Burnley.

Without a win in seven – or two months by the time West Ham next play a game – and falling off a cliff from third place in the Premier League to 16th.

Manager Manuel Pellegrini is facing serious questions over his future. And the simmering resentment from fans to the board is bubbling back to the surface.

Payet regret

So the last thing West Ham needed was to be reminded just how good their former hero turned villain Dimitri Payet is.

Payet sullied his reputation by downing tools to force a cut-price £25million return to Marseille.

Dubbed Le Snake by fans, Payet then went on to criticise the man who fought so hard not only sign but also keep him at West Ham, Slaven Bilic.

Hammers fans rightly felt betrayed, both themselves and on behalf of much-loved character Bilic.

Well Payet was up to his old West Ham tricks again at the weekend.

The Frenchman publicly criticised his former Marseille manager Rudi Garcia – now with Lyon – in the build-up to L’OM facing their rivals on Sunday.

Payet did not hold back as he savaged Garcia’s tactical acumen.

And when it came to game day he showed his utter class, scoring both goals in a superb 2-1 win over Lyon which pushed Marseille up to second in Ligue 1.

“Our relationships deteriorated,” Payet told the press ahead about Garcia ahead of the game, as reported by Get French Football News.

“What I won’t forget either, is that there were some quite spicy moments, communication had broken down, headaches. I have my own character too. We did not leave on good terms, it has to be said.

“We have a coach today (Andre Villas-Boas) who speaks with his heart, who says things as they are, who speaks “French” and does not try to make light of subjects when the hard things need to be said. That is the difference with the former one.”

Payet scored a penalty to put Marseille 1-0 up. He then started and finished a superb second goal.

Payet tracked back to tackle an opponent on the halfway line before curling a superb ball out to the wing and running into the box to receive it back before brilliantly tuck it into the far corner to make it 2-0.

Dozens of Twitter accounts posted the goals. And many of them asked the same antagonistic question ‘Miss him West Ham fans?’

The harsh truth is yes. Yes we do.
