West Ham U23s played Brighton & Hove Albion last night and there was one glaring omission.

Regular academy goalkeeper Joseph Anang was not in the matchday squad. Krisztian Hegyi took the gloves for the Premier League International Cup match while Josh Roach sat on the bench.

With Roberto struggling, there have been calls for him to be dropped. The Spaniard continues to cost his team and it is no coincidence that West Ham have not won since Lukasz Fabianski’s injury.

Anang’s absence from the U23 team could be an indication that he is set for a promotion to the first-team squad. Has Manuel Pellegrini just dropped a major selection hint ahead of the Chelsea match?

Roberto, Anang or Martin?

It has to be time for Roberto to drop out of the team. The 33-year-old is spreading panic every time the ball goes near him and he has conceded some embarrassing goals.

Next in line, on paper, is David Martin. The former Millwall goalkeeper is not an ideal pick but he is worth a try. After all, it can’t be any worse than Roberto, can it?

But Pellegrini could spring a surprise and give the gloves to Anang. The England U20 starlet could get his chance with Fabianski injured, Roberto struggling and Nathan Trott out on loan.

Anang has been our academy’s first-choice goalkeeper all season and he looks like a promising talent. There are some West Ham fans who think the 19-year-old should get an opportunity to shine.
