Former Hammer of the Year Danny Gabbidon lifts lid on when Karren Brady made West Ham transfer decision without even telling the manager

Former Hammer of the Year Danny Gabbidon has lifted the lid on an incident involving Karren Brady during his time at the club.

Ex defender Gabbidon was at West Ham for six years after signing from Cardiff in 2005.

He made 113 appearances for the Irons and was a recipient of the illustrious Hammer of the Year award during his time at the club, going down in history with the likes of Bobby Moore, Billy Bonds, Sir Trevor Brooking and many more.

Gabbidon’s time at the club came to an end not long into the reign of West Ham owners David Sullivan and David Gold and their vice-chairman Brady when he was released and joined QPR.

Former HOTY lifts lid on when Brady made transfer decision without telling West Ham boss

West Ham fans have had a tempestuous relationship with the now commonly acronymed GSB over the last 11 years.

And many supporters will simply never accept or take to the trio.

Brady’s influence at West Ham has been the source of much criticism from supporters over the years.

Now speaking on The West Ham Way Extra Time podcast, Gabbidon has lifted the lid on an incident when Brady made the decision to offload him back to Cardiff City without even telling then Hammers boss Avram Grant.

And Gabbidon says the manager was not happy when he found out, telling Brady he wanted to keep the defender at West Ham, resulting in an apology from the vice-chairman and the deal being called off.

‘Brady forced to apologise when Grant found out’ – Gabbidon

“He (Grant) started to get undermined. They were probably making decisions without him and stuff like that,” Gabbidon said on The West Ham Way Extra Time podcast.

“I was in the last year of my contract, it comes to January and Cardiff City came in – I think Dave Jones was manager and wanted to take me back to Cardiff…

“I was thinking I might have to leave here because I don’t think I’m going to get another contract, so I spoke to the owners and stuff and then Karren Brady said ‘Look Cardiff City have come in, you can leave, if you want to leave you can’.

“So I was thinking ‘Right ok, you want me to go’. What happened then was, Avram didn’t know anything about it. So Karren made the decision off her own back, said I could go, Avram then found out about it and said ‘No, I don’t want him to leave, we need him, he’s not going anywhere’.

“So basically then Karren Brady had to go and apologise to Avram and then apologise to me and say ‘Oh I’m sorry I didn’t inform the manager bla, bla, bla you’re not allowed to go now’.

Fascinating insight into West Ham’s past

“That’s probably one of the examples of some of the things that were going on.”

In fairness to Brady, she probably would have made a better manager than hapless Grant.

But in the fascinating interview, Gabbidon lifts the lid on some of the difficult issues the Israeli had to deal with during his disastrous time at West Ham which ultimately ended in relegation to the Championship.
