West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski has offered an explanation for Manuel Pellegrini’s ‘trust’ comments.
The Chilean said after the 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth that his players ‘lacked trust’.
The 64-year-old was frustrated to see his team give up a 1-0 lead to lose all three points at the London Stadium.
Goals from Callum Wilson and Steve Cook ensured that the Cherries recorded back-to-back wins in the Premier League.
It was a disappointing result, especially given the Hammers’ 4-0 defeat to Liverpool the weekend before.
What Pellegrini said
Following the game, Pellegrini rather concerningly said that his players ‘lacked trust’ in what they were doing.
As quoted by Sky Sports, he said: “For me the second half we tried to keep the 1-0, and that reflect the lack of trust the players have in what they are doing.
“I talked long with them: ‘We must forget last season, we have a new season, a new team, we need to adapt some players to the Premier League and find what the best team is in this moment, and the players must know each other’. But I think that was absolutely a lack of trust.”
Fabianski moves to clarify
Following the boss’ comments, £7 million summer signing Fabianski attempted to explain why he may have felt that way.
He said, as quoted by football.london: “From my perspective, every time we had the ball in possession, we just wanted to go straight forward.
Maybe we have to be more balanced in some situations and take our time a little bit with playing our football and keeping possession, rather than just trying to get it forward.
Maybe that’s what [Manuel Pellegrini] meant when he said [we didn’t trust ourselves], that when we get possession we need to score.
“If we relax a bit more and take care of the ball a bit better, then we will benefit.”
Conclusion
It’s important that all the players understand exactly what Pellegrini’s comments mean.
The first two results have been disappointing and it’s crucial the team are all singing off the same hymn sheet going forwards.
