And whilst every single Hammer played their part, there was one player in particular who went under the radar, yet he deserves a very special mention – Fabian Balbuena.
The 29-year-old joined the Hammers from Brazilian side Corinthians in the summer of 2018 for around £4 million (Football.London).
The Paraguay international initially impressed at the London Stadium.
Balbuena’s uncompromising style seemed to be ideally suited to the robust nature of the Premier League.
The 29-year-old is known as the ‘General’. And during his first season at the club, it was easy to see why.
Things didn’t quite work out for Balbuena last season, however. In fact, he was in truly awful form every time he played.
It seemed as though the General’s time at the London Stadium was nearing an end. Football.London claimed last month that the 29-year-old could be sold this summer.
And ExWHUemployee claimed that David Moyes simply doesn’t rate Balbuena.
But the Paraguayan’s performance against Wolves last night will surely get Moyes thinking.
The former Corinthians defender put in a no-nonsense display. He was a calm and reassuring presence alongside Angelo Ogbonna and Aaron Cresswell.
Balbuena dealt with Wolves hitman Raul Jimenez with the minimum of fuss. And he proved that he still has what it takes to make a big difference for West Ham defensively.
The 29-year-old won’t get the plaudits like Jarrod Bowen, Tomas Soucek and Declan Rice will. But every West Ham fan will know just how important the Paraguay international was last night.
