The Hammers ended up winning the game 2-1.

Not many West Ham fans expected a victory before the match, however.

Arthur Masuaku being unavailable because of a knee operation was a huge blow for David Moyes and co.

Michail Antonio was ruled out as well as he continues his recovery from injury.

There was another noticeable absentee, however.

Issa Diop was completely omitted from David Moyes’s 18. And conspiracy theories were flooding Twitter before kick-off.

Was Moyes protecting a valuable asset from possible injury before trying to sell him in January? Was Diop injured?

It turns out the truth was a little less sinister, however.

ExWHUemployee cleared things up for us. The West Ham insider claimed that Diop was simply not selected.

The 23-year-old was not injured and David Moyes just wanted to give Craig Dawson some experience with the first-team squad.

So there you have it.

It will surely still rile Diop that he was overlooked in favour of Dawson, however.

With Angelo Ogbonna and Fabian Balbuena performing so well together last night, Diop will have his work cut-out, if he is to force his way back into the West Ham starting line-up.

When the French centre-back arrived at the London Stadium two-and-a-half years ago, great things were expected of him. Now he has to stand up and be counted. Diop needs to prove that he’s good enough to make a difference for West Ham.

Whether he is given the opportunity to do exactly that, however, remains to be seen.
